10 tips to work smarter: tip 3 - Keep agreements with yourself

An appointment with yourself is also an appointment!
Door: Jennifer Boskeljon op 12 September 2021.
Read in: 2 minutes.

We often take seriously what we agree with others. But why is it so much harder to keep the agreements you make with yourself? On most days, you are simply lived by the issues of the day in the form of dozens of emails, phone calls, customers and colleagues with questions. There's always a good excuse to deviate from your schedule, right? But an appointment with yourself is also an appointment!

  • Remember that an appointment with yourself (indirectly) is also an appointment with someone else, for example your customer, organization or family members. And it is often also an appointment with your future successful self!
  • It takes several months to get into a new habit to such an extent that you don't have to think about it at all. The first three weeks in particular require extra energy and discipline. You will notice that it will become a lot easier after that. At WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER, we use the super effective 100-day contract that you conclude with yourself.
  • Be honest…why don't you do what you promise yourself? Do you really think it's that important? Remember: you show what is really important to you based on how you actually spend your time. Actions reflect priorities. Isn't that the case? Then go back to the drawing board by setting your priorities and then eliminating unwanted jammers (see tip 9).
  • Take a critical look at the tasks on your to-do list and the meetings in your agenda. What can you delegate? And what can you 'skip' to make time for your own priorities?

This is the third tip in a series of 10 tips to work smarter.
